ITEM 1-1 (Notched Floor Joists)
Notched floor joists (particularly in
the middle of the span) can cause floor joists to crack, floors to
sag, and "bounciness" to the floor structure. There are very
specific rules regarding notching or cutting floor joists.

|
ITEM 1-2 (Dampness)
A damp basement or crawlspace can cause
numerous problems to the foundation and/or the structure. It can
also cause microbial growth. In this picture, the block walls
are extremely wet (note the dark stains) and extensive microbial
growth has occurred (the white fluffy-looking stuff).

ITEM 1-3 (Leaky Toilet)
A leaky toilet can cause severe damage
to a floor structure if left unattended. In this case the toilet
has been leaking for some time and has rotted out the sub-flooring and
the floor joists. There were 2 adjacent bathroom toilets in this
case; both had been leaking. A contractor's estimated cost to
repair: $10,000.
